Ask Us Anything: Rose Gold Eyes

Komal Basith

We love hearing from you here at Jossbox, and so we’re formalizing this love – putting a ring on it, if you will – with Ask Us Anything, where we attempt to answer your (hopefully not) burning questions about all things beauty.

It’s a mix of general wisdom we’ve pick up over years of being in the beauty industry combined with expert advice from our dermatologist, facialist, makeup artist and hairstylist friends, whose collective careers span decades (and almost every celebrity imaginable), and who are all used to being contacted at random hours of the day with pressing questions about the state of our hair / skin / eye shadow / lives. Have a beauty question of your own? Ask away!

I’m tired of the same old smokey eye and I’d like to try something new when I go out. What do you recommend?

I’m really loving rose gold at the moment; the warmth of the gold offsets the cool rose tones perfectly, making it the kind of shade that suits every skin tone. When used on your eyes, it’s a gorgeous, fresh take on the smokey eye that can also be toned down for the day. Urban Decay’s Naked 3 eyeshadow palette, which was used to create the look above, features a host of stunning rose gold shades that are incredibly versatile. Use the first four shades all over the eye, the next four shades on the centre, and the remaining four to define the crease at the outer corner. Between the twelve shades, you’ll have everything from fresh daytime looks to slightly more amped up, yet still perfectly summery evening looks covered.

I have clear skin all over my face except for on my chin, where I get really large cystic acne breakouts, especially around my period. I can feel them under the surface a week or so before they show up, and it’s really annoying. Is there anything I can do?

There sure is; cystic acne is almost always caused by a hormonal imbalance, so if you notice a lot of them cropping up even when you’re not around your period, you might want to have it looked at by a dermatologist. In the meanwhile, Mario Badescu’s Buffering Lotion is formulated especially for cystic acne. It doesn’t look like much, but give this tiny bottle a good shake and apply some of the thin, milky fluid anywhere you can feel a cyst about to form, and it will prevent it from coming to a head. In all honesty, this stuff is magic; it makes cystic acne vanish practically overnight.

I’ve just had my hair coloured. Is there anything I can do to make sure that the colour doesn’t fade?

Sulfates are one of the most common ingredients in shampoos and while they’re great for creating a big fluffy lather, they tend to leach colour from the hair and dry the cuticle out, both of which can make freshly coloured hair look flat and dull well before it’s time for a touch up. Switch to a shampoo that is both specially formulated for coloured hair and features no sulfates at all, like Schwarzkopf’s Color Freeze Sulfate-Free Shampoo, and you’ll notice your hair colour stays fresh for much, much longer.
