The Holiday Party Look: The Red Lip

Mamta Mody

In the bid to try new things as far as makeup goes this holiday season, we’ve roped in supermodel Nidhi Sunil to show us how she does her five favourite party looks. The mandate? No more than four products (not including foundation), and they’ve all got to take fifteen minutes or less, and last through the night.

We talked about an effortless shimmery eye and stained lip yesterday and today we’re seeing red – as far as your lips go, anyway!

It’s the holidays! If ever there was a time for red lips, it’s right now – even if you feel like you’re a makeup novice (red lips are easy, as you’ll see below). A red lip instantly makes anyone look polished and pulled together without really having to do much, and they’re a favourite of Nidhi’s, too – “I’m lazy with makeup, so a strong lip is an all-time favourite,” she says. Below, here are 4 easy steps to modern, flawless red lips.

We’re loving Colorbar’s  Take Me As I Am Lipstick in Sensuous Red, a creamy, matte formula that lasts for ages, Revlon’s Skinlights Face Illuminator in Pink Light for glowing skin, L’Oreal’s Volume Million Lashes Mascara in Extra Black for lashes for days, and L’Oreal’s True Match Powder in Golden Beige to seal things in.

Take a tiny bit of the illuminating lotion and, using your fingertips, dab it onto the bridge of your nose, the little dip above your upper lip, and cheekbones. Revlon's highlighter melts right in and helps your face catch the light at just the right spots while being more shimmery than sparkly, which is exactly what you want in a highlighter.

The tricky thing about a bold red mouth is making sure the colour doesn’t budge all night – you don’t want to end up with lipstick just on the corners of your mouth after a few glasses of wine. “To make the colour really last, I go over my lips once with lipstick, then blot lightly with a regular face tissue. Then, placing the tissue over my lips, I dust a bit of powder over it to set the first layer,” says Nidhi. She then tops this up with a second layer of colour. The result? Red lips that stay put all night long.

Next, to really seal things in, Nidhi takes a pointy eyeshadow brush (a Q-tip works great too), dips it into the pressed powder, and outlines the edges of her mouth with it. This stops the colour from bleeding past your lips through the night “and glues it into place,” she says.

Less is definitely more when it comes to a bold red lip, so Nidhi skips eyeshadow or eyeliner (the winged eyeliner + red lip combo is a classic for a reason, but we’re after more of a modern approach this time around), and focuses on amping up her lashes instead with two coats of mascara. The result is a thick fringe of lashes that’s gorgeous without looking dated.

And there you have it – 13 minutes to glowing skin, long, thick lashes and a bright red lip that won’t budge for hours!

Tomorrow, we’re giving the classic smokey eye a go, but not as you know it. See you then!
