Another crack in Kylie’s cosmetics empire.

There’s no denying that when it comes to marketing a product, no one does it better than the Kardashians. Case in point: Kylie Jenner’s Lip Kits, which have literally broken the Internet (sorry Kim K) and tend to sell out as soon as they’re restocked on Kylie’s site.  

All is not well in Kylie’s cosmetics empire, however; first she was called out on the quality of the wands that come with the Kylie Glosses, and now another beauty blogger is making news for claiming that the new, reformulated Lip Kits (specifically in the colour Candy K) are not only significantly different in shade from the first one, but that they also contain the exact ingredients as the ColourPop Ultra Matte Liquid Lipsticks - which currently retail for far less than the Lip Kits (about $23 less, which is approximately Rs. 1,500).

First up, the shades. The new, reformulated Candy K is more raspberry-pink compared to the original nude, as swatched by blogger Stephanie Nicole:


Which seems a bit odd, considering they’re being marketed and sold as the exact same product. Here’s where things get really interesting, though – look at Stephanie’s side-by-side comparison of the ingredients in Candy K with those in the ColourPop Ultra Matte Liquid Lipsticks:


“They’re identical,” says Stephanie. "The ColourPop one does have a few other ingredients in there, which are filler products, but every single thing that's in these Kylie Jenner lipsticks are in the ColourPop ones."

Which might still be OK, except you’d pay way more for the Lip Kit than you would for the ColourPop glosses (if you could get your hands on either in India, that is).

Stephanie’s guess for why they cost so much more? Kylie Jenner.

“The company has to pay Kylie Jenner because her name is on it. The extra money is not going for product development or better ingredients," she says. "All she is doing is basically lending her name out to a brand that knows that no matter what it is, people will wait in line for this. So when they saw the huge response, they cut some corners, and took a good formula and made it cheap."
