We Tried Miranda Kerr's Green Tea Steam Ritual

When you think organic and supermodel, you might picture a glowing image of Australian supermodel Miranda Kerr– yes, she of the dream body and preternaturally clear skin. It’s no secret that the Victoria’s Secret angel is a big believer in straight-from-the-earth beauty – she even created a skincare line, Kora Organics, dedicated to it, which now fills the carts of beauty aficionados the world over. (She promised the rosehip oil was her saviour against stretch marks post pregnancy, and that’s how the fatty acid-rich oil ended up finding its way to beauty shelves everywhere.)

Recently, Daily Mail reported that Kerr has a special place for green tea in her beauty routine – it’s even one of the star ingredients of her line amongst others like noni (that she vouches works instant wonders on breakouts), the aforementioned rosehip oil, chamomile and rose quartz. So what’s the supermodel-approved ritual? A weekly home made facial steam with green tea-infused boiling water. It’s your average steam (that’s already great for cleaning out your pores) but with a green tea bag thrown in for extra benefits. Green tea, as it turns out, isn’t just a great antioxidant that provides stellar anti-aging benefits, it also soothes irritated skin and works to protect skin from the sun (and even acne!).

It’s quick, rejuvenating and only involves four steps:

- Cleanse your face as usual.

- Follow with a gentle exfoliation, scrubbing in circular motions to get rid of pore-clogging debris.

- Now comes the steam. Use a steamer or a big bowl of steaming water, dunk in a green tea bag or loose leaves, and allow it to brew. Drape a towel over your head, trapping the steam within. If it’s too hot (if you can’t breathe) back away a bit.

- When the steam dies down, pat your face down and finish with a light moisturizer to seal in the hydration.

The DIY deep double cleanse facial regime seemed so tempting, we decided to test it ourselves – and we have to say, we owe you one, Miranda! We were five guinea pigs, each with different skin types, and we all saw a difference. The general consensus: super soft and supple skin for days to come! The idea is that when the tea emanates from boiling water, your skin pretty much receives direct antioxidant shots straight through the pores, thereby detoxifying and hydrating. You’ll notice a healthy glow immediately post-steam, while making it a part of your weekly routine will give you plumper looking skin in the long run.

The next time you feel like doing yourself a one up, give this steam a go – you won’t regret it!
