Why You Should Shop The Men’s Department Every Once In A While

Naaila Khan

Whether it’s Gucci’s new creative director making his womenswear runway debut with an attractive mix of female and male models, or Proenza Schouler’s smouldering hunks on the ramp for their womenswear show, gender boundaries/norms are starting to blur in today’s progressive age – at least in the glittering world of fashion, it can be said. And we’re not talking androgyny here (Annie Hall owned that way back when), but more gender neutrality (Exhibit A: Kanye West rocking a Givenchy skirt). But let’s not discount ourselves of some credit too – haven’t we all borrowed our dad’s/brother’s/boyfriend’s clothes at some point? There, gender neutrality.

And it works out pretty great, actually – there’s something about male apparel. It’s easy to style, loose-fitting so you don’t have to second think that third piece of cake, and above all, supremely comfortable. So we decided to put together a few looks with elements that you can borrow from the boys and look über stylish while at it. Have a go!

Look 1: The Laidback Lass

Borrow: Watch and cardigan

Make it work: You already have the distressed jeans and the sports shoes, team them up with a neutral-coloured slouchy cardigan and a super masculine watch to create a look that’s – surprisingly – not so…masculine. Just way more comfy than a corseted bralet that’s always threatening to asphyxiate you.

Multi-Striped Cardigan, Rs. 1,599, available at Forever 21; Patched Jeans, Rs. 1,290, available at Zara stores nationwide; Adidas Original Tech Super Pastel Trainers, Rs. 8,000, available at Asos; Timex Weekender Chrono Watch, Rs. 5,124, available at Urban Outfitters.

Look 2: The Girl in the Man Scarf

Borrow: T-shirt and man scarf

Make it work: Pairing a long skirt with your brother’s t-shirt in the same colour palette and then throwing on your dad’s printed suit scarf gives ‘blended family’ a whole new meaning, but also makes for a beautifully put together look. Wear them with shoes in a complementary colour – brogues, loafers, oxfords, anything goes!

Vivienne Westwood Scribble Orb Silk Scarf, Rs. 10,000, available at Asos; Wrap Long Skirt, Rs. 1,740, available at Mango; Flat Leather Shoes, Rs. 1,990, available at Zara; Striped Cotton T-shirt, Rs. 990, available at Mango.

Look 3: The Bowtie Fan

Borrow: Plaid shirt, man bag, and bowtie

Make it work: Let’s first celebrate that pretty plaid has been gender neutral forever – if Rob Pattinson and Taylor Swift both decided to wear plaid together one day, we honestly wouldn’t know which one to pick. Steal a plaid shirt, wear it with your dressy black shorts and a sturdy (and super roomy – you definitely won’t be missing your tote) man bag. Pair it with your booties and add a show-stealing bowtie for effect. Rob and Tay Tay will have nothing on you.

Checked Shirt, Rs. 1,690, available at Zara; Textured Silk Bowtie, Rs. 1,140, available at Mango; Teagan Tux City Shorts, Rs. 1,695, available at Forever Now; Suede Cowboy Boots, Rs. 1,990, available at Zara; Brown Faux Leather Satchel, Rs. 2,500, available at Asos.
